Our Road Trip Plans For The Summer

As promised, we are making time this summer for a little traveling. Its been 3 1/2 months since we’ve been home and our feet are getting seriously itchy! Being domestic has been great for a little while and it sure is nice not living out of a suitcase, but the wanderlust is starting to take over.

Fortunately, we are in a position where we can just pick up and go for a while and that’s just what we plan to do. We will take our T-Mobile hotspot with us so we will have internet and can continue to work on the road when needed. So what’s the plan exactly? We’re still trying to figure out the details, but we knew we couldn’t pass up another summer without seeing Colorado again. If you remember, we visited 2 years ago and fell completely in love with it. In fact, we were tempted to give up travel and settle down in Salida. You can bet we will be stopping there again!

Here is what we have figured out so far. We are starting off the road trip by heading to Windrock Park in Tennessee mid-June with Charlie’s parents. Windrock Park provides 72,000 acres of off-roading through the scenic mountains so we will be renting a couple of side x sides and hitting the trails for two days. This is also an excuse to see my sweet little niece in Chattanooga that is just a few weeks old!

After tearing up the trails in TN, we will make our way out west to Colorado. Our first stop will be at Bronco Billy’s Hotel & Casino in Cripple Creek. We stayed there on our last visit and couldn’t get over the fact we got a room for just $69/night, including breakfast and dinner at the Casino restaurants! We called the other day and they are offering the same package, so…sold! There is so much to explore in that area so we will hang out there for a few days.

After we leave there, it’s up in the air which direction we will head. We want to spend a few nights in Salida and we definitely want to camp at South Mineral in Silverton again. However, we want to hit some new spots as well! Crested Butte is high on our list of places to see, and we would also like to visit Telluride, Steamboat Springs, Breckenridge, Glenwood Springs and so many more places. We are looking for suggestions so please let us know what can’t be missed!

The one thing we are sure of is we have to make our way to Las Vegas by the 4th of July! We are so excited for Vegas for a number of reasons. For one, Charlie has never been and he loves to gamble. Secondly, we just bought tickets to see GARTH BROOKS on Independence Day! Yep, we are country music fans all the way. But what makes it even better is that we will be meeting up with 2 of our favorite people, Carlo and Flor, from Next Stop Who Knows!! We spent a lot of time with them when we were living in Chiang Mai and we haven’t seen them in over a year. We are thrilled to be reuniting with them!! Many adventures to be had I’m sure 🙂

After Vegas, we are torn between heading northeast to Utah or heading further west to drive through Death Valley and up to Yosemite National Park. We are looking to be back home around mid-July so we will have to see how it plays out.

Temperatures are rising quickly in Florida so it will be so nice to escape the heat and humidity for some cooler weather in Colorado and hopefully check some things off our US bucket list.

Again, we are open to suggestions so tell us some of your favorite places from Colorado to California!

I think Yosemite is a must see. If you get there I will be interested to read your take on it. I also liked Truckee, California and Stateline California/Nevada. Neat little small towns.

Just started diving into your adventures. Wow! Something I could see myself doing before we had kids, but perhaps a mini-version is in my future – before long, both kids out of the house on their own. Love your nomadic spirit! I’m super interested in volunteer & sustainable travel, so would love to get your insight on what you’ve seen or experienced out there around the planet. Who’s doing it well? Who isn’t? AND, during your summer trip, if you get into Texas, must visit historic, charming Georgetown, just north of Austin. Plenty of things to do to keep cool, great food, shopping, art, culture. They are the 2nd city in the country to run on 100% renewable energy which surprises many. Austin is big fun & highly recommend it (where I live), but Gtown is a fab little escape nearby. Enjoy and look forward to hearing from you!

That’s great! For sustainable travel and volunteer I would check out http://www.tammyandchrisonthemove.com/ and http://breathedreamgo.com/. They have a lot of great information. And thanks for the tips about Georgetown. That sounds soooo charming and right up our alley. Would love to make it there and Austin as well really! We’ll definitely keep you posted if we make it that way 😉

Excellent & thanks so much for the leads to these 2 websites! Stay safe & have a blast this summer. We’re heading to the beach this weekend, but I’m most excited about an anniversary trip to Croatia in a few weeks. I’m sure I’ll post a few awesome photos if you want to check them out on Twitter @LNoneill or Instagram @loneill1.

Love to hook you up in Georgetown & ATX sometime soon.
