Two Weeks in Thailand Travel Itinerary

It took us a year, but we finally managed to convince at least one of our family members to dust off their passport and travel 26 hours across the globe to visit us in Thailand. We were super excited to have my brother visit, not only to show him this beautiful country we’ve been living in the past year but also for a chance (excuse?) for us to power down the laptops and play tourist ourselves.

Of course we wanted to show him some of our favorite spots that we’ve been to in the past, but we also wanted to explore some new places together. He managed to get enough time away from work so that he had two full weeks of traveling in Thailand (after deducting a few days of flight time across the ocean), a rarity for us Americans. Although a good amount of time, it still wasn’t enough time to show him everything I would have liked. But it never really is, is it? I had to make the most of the time we had so I did a lot of researching and working out an itinerary that maxed out our time as best as I possibly could. In just two weeks time we managed to see the big city lights of Bangkok; the beaches in the south; the mountains in the countryside; rice paddies and vast farm land; roof top bars on top of modern skyscrapers; scenic waterfalls with emerald green pools; stunning sunsets nearly every night; authentic Thai villages and ancient temples and just about everything else in between. By the end of the trip we really felt like we covered it all and Justin left not feeling like he missed out on much although still wanting to return for more one day.

Here’s a wrap of our complete two week Thailand itinerary:

3 Nights in Bangkok

Day 1: We took a water taxi towards the Grand Palace, a one hour longtail boat ride on the Chao Phraya River, visited Asiatique on the Riverfront and finished the evening with lots of beer and first class entertainment on Khao San Road.

Day 2: We took a stroll through Lumpini Park, visited two of Bangkok’s largest shopping malls, Siam Paragon and Central World, got 150 baht foot massages, happy hour at the Centara Grand Red Sky rooftop bar for sunset followed by a late night in the Sukhumvit area (oh yes…Soi Cowboy).

2 Nights in Kanchanaburi

Day 3: We decided to be adventurous and took the 3rd class train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi on the infamous Death Railway. We arrived by noon and spent the rest of the day hanging out by the pool and snoozing in the hammock at the lovely Sabai@Kan Resort. That evening, we went for a ride down by the river and had a wonderful dinner on a floating restaurant at sunset.

Day 4: Spent the day at Erawan Falls – trekking, swimming and saving a woman’s life, but that story is for another post!

Day 5: We took a minibus back to Bangkok and a flight from DMK to Krabi

2 Nights in Ao Nang, Krabi

Day 6: Took a longtail boat from Ao Nang to Railay and spent the day sunning, swimming and eating. We also walked over to Phranang Beach (aka Cave Beach) which is about a 15 min walk.

Day 7: Strolled around Ao Nang in the morning and then took the afternoon ferry to Phuket.

2 Nights in Kata, Phuket

Day 8: We rented motorbikes and explored the beaches of Phuket, from Kata to Surin. We hung out on Surin beach for hours before heading to dinner at one of the stunning view points for sunset.

Day 9: We rode motorbikes south to one of the popular view points, then carried on to Rawaii beach and back to Kata beach to soak up a few more hours in the sun. We took a minibus back to the airport and the late flight back to Chiang Mai.

4 Nights in Chiang Mai

Day 10: We were all under the weather this day so we watched movies. Suggestions? Take a Thai cooking class, see the elephants or go ziplining!

Day 11: We got up early to beat the crowds and visited Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, then motorbiked a portion of the Samoeng Loop. Luckily smoky season in Chiang Mai was still holding off and the views were pretty clear. We stopped at one of our favorite restaurants in Mae Rim, Steak of the Day, and then spent the afternoon at Mon Cham/Nong Hoi Royal Project. The evening was topped off by drinks on the rooftop bar at Maya shopping mall near Nimman.

Day 12: We spent the day exploring the Old City and the many, many temples, got another 150 baht Thai massage, and then visited the Saturday Walking Street for shopping. (Alternatives are Sunday Walking Street or the Night Bizarre during the week). We followed this up by late night drinks in the Nimman area.

Day 13: Our last morning we had a nice, big breakfast at Bake and Bite in Nimman and Justin flew back to Bangkok that afternoon for his early flight out the next morning.

And that’s pretty much how our two weeks went! We were on the go a lot and by the time we made it to Chiang Mai we slowed down a lot. We were all feeling a little under the weather (probably from all of the traveling) so we didn’t fit as much in Chiang Mai as we had wished, but Justin was happy just relaxing and getting foot massages.

Any regrets?

Yes. Phuket. I hesitated with this one when mapping out our itinerary and I wish I had followed my instinct. We visited Phuket nearly 4 years ago and loved it but we heard that it was pretty out of control these days with scams and prices and tourists and just being run down. We wanted to see some other popular islands that Thailand has to offer and our friends even tried talking us into visiting the island of Koh Lipe with them. But I hesitated because we hadn’t been there yet and couldn’t make a comparison. Also, the boys were more interested in renting motorbikes and exploring rather than being confined to a tiny island and sunning it up on the beach all day, so Phuket seemed like a better option for us. It didn’t take long though before we all agreed we should have stayed in Krabi for 4 nights or opted for another island altogether.

The highlights?

I think we all agreed Erawan Falls was the best day of the entire two weeks. There are no words – it was just fantastic! We also really enjoyed our hotel in Kanchanaburi and the river was so beautiful. We all wished we had more time explore there.

This will be our itinerary in Thailand.

My question is, what’s the best (cheap but nice) hotel that we can reserve in Bangkok that is near the train station going to kanchanaburo? And also a hotel that is not too far for the places to visit in Bangkok like Khao San Road and The temples etc. How many hours is the train going to Kanchanaburi? Can I bookmthe hotel in Kanchanaburi in advance?

Where to get a ride on minibus that can get us up to DMK airport to take our flight to Krabi? What time will be the best to take a flight to Krabi? And when arriving to Krabi, would there be a taxi or public transport to transfer us to our hotel? Is it best when we book a ticket from DMK to Krabi before arriving in Thailand? Or can I buy a ticket in one of ticket selling store in Bangkok? What is the best time to flight to Krabi?

Where is the ferry terminal in Krabi? Where can I buy a ticket to ferry traveling to Kata, Phuket?

We will also take a flight from Phuket to Bangkok, can I buy a ticket from Phuket to Bangkok together with our ticket from DMK to Krabi?

PS: I copied your itinerary except for Chiang Mai because we just have 13 days in Thailand, and on 13th day we need to come back to Bangkok to take our flight early morning.

How much is your budget for the transportation? How much in USD more or less we will be needing? We are 2 person traveling. Any tips ? Thank you!

Your summary tempts me to visit, but National Geographic programs about the deadly animals in Thailand scare me off. Don’t get me wrong, I love most animals. But snakes and slimy things freak me out. How likely is it to run into something (or have something run into me) that would cause me to shriek like a banshee?
