Doughnuts, pastries, bacon, bagels; its not what’s for breakfast in Thailand.
Thais do breakfast slightly different than us Westerners. Common breakfast meals go something like this; chicken and rice, rice porridge, pork fat on a stick, rice soup, Vietnamese breakfast.
Of these many choices, I typically stick to Khao Man Gai (chicken and rice) and Vietnamese breakfast. I don’t know what it is with me in Thailand, but I have grown a liking to Vietnamese food (read more about Vietnamese Buffet Here).
Vietnamese breakfast consists of multiple choices, but most notably are the tiny baguettes. Baguettes come stuffed with a variety of different minced toppings. After trying a multitude of different flavors, I prefer the chicken and mushroom the most. Also baguettes will come plain, with butter to be ate with eggs. Eggs can be served up in any style fancied, my choice always being fried. Two plates of two fried eggs, three sausage baguettes, and two iced coffees will set you back a whopping 94 baht ($3USD). This is a cheap and delicious option for breakfast.
My other go-to breakfast is khao man gai, or in English, chicken and rice. I used to try and wait to eat this meal for lunch, but lunch has now crept up to breakfast. It seemed weird to me to be eating rice and chicken for breakfast, but the deliciousness has overcome my timing of dining logic. Also, the Thais start eating this bright and early, so of course, I should too. The name of this dish pretty much implies what it is; this is nothing more than chicken over white rice and a brown ginger sauce to be drizzled over the top. The difference between khao man gai shops/street carts lies in how chewy the chicken is and the flavor of the ginger sauce. Surprisingly, the taste varies quite a bit, and this is the reason I am willing to drive across town for a particular khao man gai lady. Almost every khao man gai will serve pork in addition to chicken, but in an attempt to play the heathy card, I stick to chicken.
