From Luxury RV to Retro Camper Van: Life Update!

Its been a while since our last update and over 3 months since our RV trip across America abruptly came to an end. Its hard to believe that the holidays have already come and gone and its the year 2019! Where does the time go?

If you’ve been following along watching our RV series on YouTube, then you’ll know we are quite a bit behind! In fact, our most recent video was from Colorado back in September! The beginning of September that is. One thing we discovered this past year is that Vlogging isn’t easy. It takes a lot of time and dedication and I have the utmost respect for those that produce videos on the reg. For us, however, it is more of a hobby and a way to record the memories so it often gets the back burner to our “real” work. We’ll get caught up eventually!

If you did see our most recent video (below), then you probably picked up on our frustrations with RV life…

I wanted to do a quick update on what’s been going on since we arrived back in Florida and what our plans look like for this year going forward because we’ve had a lot of people asking us about the RV lately.

When we last left off, we had arrived back in Florida and rented an apartment for 3 months. We weren’t sure if we would continue the RV life after those 3 months were up. However, after much discussion, I think we both knew deep down we were over it…

We sold the RV.

We made the decision to sell our travel trailer. It was too much work and too much moving around, and for the amount of money we were spending, we decided we would be happier renting short-term apartments in the places we want to visit. This allows us to continue working while traveling and just suits our (spontaneous) lifestyle a bit better. Not to mention, we were itching to break out our passports again. Having said that, the travel trailer allowed us to discover so many new places and find out which places we really want to go back to.

We both agreed if we give the RV lifestyle another shot, we would definitely go with a Class B or C. While the travel trailer was great when we were sitting still and certainly felt like home, we honestly wished we had something smaller and easier to maneuver around. We aren’t ones to make plans way in advance because we like to go with the flow, where we want, when we want. However, we quickly discovered that there are way more RVers than campgrounds. And if you want to stay in the great campgrounds, you have to book and plan in advance, unless you want to be scrambling at the last minute. We wouldn’t have minded the scrambling if we were in something smaller and a little more discreet that allowed us to do more boondocking or getting off the beaten path. It would be much easier to pull over somewhere for the night and move on the next day when necessary. But with a bigger rig like ours, we really had to plan out our exact routes and stops and always stressed about getting into a sticky situation.

Needless to say, I spent more time figuring out our route and researching where to go next than actually working (on our real jobs) for the entire 5 months we were on the road. And because we could rarely find a place to stay for over 3-5 nights, we were constantly on the move. After the 5 months were up, we were burnt out on RV life.

We put our Imagine on the market and it sold within a week. The buyer drove all of the way from New Mexico the weekend before Thanksgiving to pick it up.

We tell you this not to discourage anyone from the RV lifestyle. This can be a fantastic way of traveling or even living. But finding the right type of rig to travel in really is a personal path and choice. And there really is no “perfect” RV. There are pros and cons to each style. It all comes back to how you travel and everyone is different.

So…What’s Next?

Our 3 month lease in Crystal River was up this past week and we just moved down to Gulfport (St. Pete) for the next 2 months. We rented a cute little house 2 blocks from the beach and 1 block from the main street with tons of shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance. Its a very laid back, “Key West” vibe and we are enjoying Florida’s wonderful winter weather. We are one block from a great coffee shop, so we plan to spend the next 2 months continuing to catch up on work, editing videos, as well as hanging out at the beach. We will also be doing some vlogging in Gulfport so you can see what we’re getting up to.

After 5 months of being back in Florida, our feet will certainly be getting itchy and we’ve already made plans to break out our passports again in the Spring!

Trading in for a CAMPER VAN!

We will be heading back to Croatia in April and are SUPER EXCITED to be doing a 10 day road trip around the Balkans in a camper van! Yep, we are going back to camp life for just a short time! This will be quite a change and a challenge as we are used to traveling in our 32 ft travel trailer. With a super large kitchen. And bathroom. And heated recliners. And smart TV. It will certainly be interesting to see how we do traveling in a retro camper van.

This isn’t our first rodeo in a camper van, though! We actually did a camper van trip in New Zealand back in 2015, which is what originally sparked our desire to live the RV lifestyle.

We’ve done lots of road tripping around Europe in the past, but never by motorhome! Its really important to do your research before hiring a campervan in Europe. There are many types of motorhomes to choose from, as well as companies, and what works best for you will depend on how you travel, where you want to travel, budget, and more.

Balkan Campers is the company we are are partnering with and they are doing some really cool things. They are currently offering a great promo (40% off pre-season camper van rentals) so if this is something of interest to you, NOW is the time to book!

We are currently researching our route and trying to decide where we want to visit this time around. In 2017, we did a 3 week Balkan road trip in a car around Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia. It was one of the best trips of our lives. But we definitely want to see some new places!

After our Balkans road trip, we will be heading to Italy, where our good friend is getting hitched. We will be renting a car and road tripping around Italy for about 2 weeks and my brother and his girlfriend will be joining us. We’ve been to Northern Italy in the past, but there is so much more we want to see (looking at you Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome!). We’ll be doing a variation of this 10 day Italy road trip itinerary!

We plan to spend most of the summer in Europe as we would like to see some new countries, as well as visit some of our old favorites. But you know how we change our minds at the drop of a hat, so you’ll just have to keep following along to see where 2019 takes us…

Hey you are down here in my hood. I have been tossing around a change as well with the class C vs 5th wheel. I’m looking for a small 2nd car for thisx area since its snowbird season and my tundra has been hit 3 times. Makes me question the 5th wheel. I have been having thoughts about FT TV although i have family spots around the U.S. I really love the idea of Motor home due to the although my thoughts have been. Ugh…maintaining 2 engines and if there’s something wrong, it’s your home that has to go in for repair. Maybe I’ll see the ram down here and wave!!!

Yes we are back in St Pete! Keep an eye out for us on the road!! We are actually trying to get rid of the Ram right bow because its just too much to drive around here (as you said). Plus, we just have no need for it anymore. But I understand you’re mixed feelings. We really struggled with Class C vs tow behind in the beginning. I think it just really comes down to how much you’ll be moving around. The 5th will definitely be more comfortable – more like home. Plus its nice to drop it and then have your truck to get around. But yes Class C has its own benefits as well. Its such a toss up! Good luck with your decision. I think the best thing is to just get in one and give it a try. You’ll learn what aspects of an RV are most important to you.

Hey,
Just found you two last week on YouTube. Got caught up to the replacement microwave video and jumped over to your site to find you quit the trailer. How I found you a in the first place was researching actual user reviews of the GD 2670MK. The layout is good for my needs but I am concerned about quality. I understand that a lot of the components are third part and are going to be pretty much the same in all the brands. But in one of the videos you made a comment about some bad corner seals on the slide. My concern here is that there are quite a few other complaints on the web about poor sealing work on GD units…even the more expensive series. The bad seals have lead to buckling of the exterior panels and other damage. So. Did the slide corner seals turn out to be a problem. And I guess, if you’d venture to say, do you think the 2670 was pretty well built?
Good luck on your next adventure!!!

Hey there – thanks for the comment! I totally understand your concerns. Its definitely a tough decision. I think what you are referring to is when Charlie mentioned the bulb seals. It wasn’t a big deal, but there was a little bit of cracking on the bulb seal where the slide meets the trailer and we would have liked to have had it replaced but never did. We never had any major issues and most problems we had turned out to be minor or a fairly easy fix. Even still, it was definitely more work than we anticipated it being. And it did seem like it was “always something”. I do think that this is just the nature of the beast with all RV’s though! We would definitely have no problem buying another Grand Design if we decide to go down this road again. Hope this helps!

Where did you post your Imagine when you put it up for sale? We want to sell our Imagine and I love to sell it in a week. Thanks, Mike.

Hey Mike, we posted ours on RV Trader, Craigslist, Facebook marketplace and put links in some of our Youtube videos. I would say the large majority of interest came from RV Trader. It was worth the money we spent to list it there. Good luck!

Hi Brittany and Charlie! I just stumbled across your YT channel today and watched your “Why We Quit RVing” video. And it has REALLY made me think! I’m a single mom to a 12 yo and our dream is to travel the US before he graduates (we homeschool). I work FT from home doing medical coding and could theoretically travel and still work that job (they are highly recommending the WiFi Ranger setup) but I’m also building an online business to hopefully replace that coding income. Either way, I will need connectivity! As a single mom, I’m not great at home (and I’m guessing RV) repairs, hate to be hot (was planning to RV chasing the 70 degree highs around the country in a Class C) and have only been camping a handful of times in my life. The appeal of RVing has been to see the US with my son and experience places and things we wouldn’t if we stayed put. Now I’m wondering if I’m going about this the right way. I never considered doing the Air BnB thing for a month or so in different places we would like to see but that sounds completely more my speed. How can I explore this option more?
Thank you both so much for being real and honest. I would hate to completely uproot us and end up hating the lifestyle.

Blessings,
Tara

Hey Tara, thanks so much for your comment! Its awesome that you want to get out and explore with your son! I don’t want you to get discouraged, but glad you are thinking things through. My advice would be to rent a class C for a couple of weeks if you can and give yourself enough time to really try “living” in it. Because of course its great for weekends or short trips when you are not living in it and can get by for a bit without great internet, or skimping on water. But, of course, when its your lifestyle its quite different! But its good to explore other options as well, like you said! We are finding the best way to find monthly rentals is on vacation rental sites like Airbnb or VRBO. If we are staying longer than a week or two, we will often ask the host if there is any discount for staying longer. Many times, they will send us a better rate. Not always – but it sure doesn’t hurt to ask. Another great way is using Facebook groups. If there is a particular city you are looking at, search Facebook groups for rentals in that city. For instance, we recently joined a bunch of groups in Colorado as we are hoping to head there this summer (i.e. Steamboat Springs Homes for Rent or Sale, Durango Colorado Real Estate For Sale Or Rent). Its been a great way to find rentals as people are always posting in them. We’ve also posted in groups ourselves telling our story and what we are looking for, budget, etc and had some great options come up that way. Craigslist is still a good place to check as well, just be careful of scammers and I would never send money up front. And ANOTHER option is doing house sitting. We’ve used the site Trusted Housesitters and have had incredible experiences around the world (New Zealand, Malaysia, Germany, France). Its an awesome way to see the country, or the world. Definitely look into it! Hope this helps!!
