I believe it is pon-la-mai ma-ha-sa-gen. No idea if this is spelled correctly but this is how we were told it was pronounced!
ReplyWe had planned for the day to relax and catch up on stories, “telecommute,” and the like. While eating breakfast at the Blue Diamond, I overheard a hippy-looking guy talking about Miracle Fruit. If there is anyone to know about Miracle Fruit, I would assume it to be a hippy-like 60 year-old. After talking with this man for a few minutes, I discovered there is a huge flower market just outside of Chiang Mai that has these plants. Scratch the blogging plans for the day, were going to get some Miracle Fruit.
Right after breakfast, we set out to Khamtieng Flower Market. It wasn’t a far drive from the city center, maybe 3-4 kilos. Navigating the market posed more of a challenge than finding the market itself, due to the enormous size. Needless to say, Thais love their flowers and plants. Our search for Miracle Fruit was briefly stalled due to an awesome fish/aquarium market within Khamtieng. We spent at least a half an hour browsing the beautiful fish and aquarium setups.
It wasn’t long before we found someone who understood our completely butchered version of asking for Miracle Fruit in Thai. The woman who recognized what we were asking for knew our Thai was in need of serious help, so she wrote it down [in Thai] for us to take around to other shops. One more shop down, and this woman knew exactly where we could locate the elusive fruit. Superb directions lead us right to the promise land.
Come to find out, the woman who had Miracle fruit, had the plant only. The berries/fruit are not due to be harvested until January/February. We did find out the plants are only 200 baht each. I am contemplating buying a few of these to satisfy my continuing Miracle fruit curiosity come the new year. There is surely to be an update to this story, whether I have to buy the plant and wait it out for the berries, or I’ll track the berries down in another market.
UPDATE: I did end up purchasing three Miracle Fruit plants (1000 baht for all three), and they have since produced berries twice in the span of 6 months. You can definitely find them all over Khamtieng Market.
Heres how the adventure went firsthand
