You can’t venture around Khon Kaen, Thailand, very long without seeing the vibrant yellow and white T-Rex mascot of the Khon Kaen Football Club. People in Khon Kaen are extremely supportive of their football club, and they show it well via bumper-stickers, t-shirts, flags, and anything else that a logo can be stamped onto. We decided we had to see this special team for ourselves, but their home-game schedule never seemed to match ours. That was until this past Saturday night when we finally were able to go see a match.
Saturday, November 2, 2013, we headed to the Khon Kaen Football Stadium. This is the only stadium in Khon Kaen, aside from the newly developed Khon Kaen University stadium (still under construction). Nonetheless, this place is hard to miss when driving through Khon Kaen; it is huge. We didn’t really know what we were getting ourselves into when we headed to the stadium that night; ticket price, seating, food, beer, etc.
I was originally told that the matches were free to go watch. Come to find out, a ticket was 100 baht ($3USD) per person. Seating is general admission and consist of concrete bleachers. Walking into the stadium after the match has started is a bit inundating as a foreigner. All eyes were on us as we walked up the steps…..
I made the quick decision to make a beeline to an open space. Turns out, that space was open for a reason; it was directly behind the rowdiest of Khon Kaen football supporters. We sat amongst Khon Kaen’s version of a pep band, which is 5 different drums beating at the same time, and lots of chanting. Khon Kaen, Khon Kaen, Khon Kaen, we are Khon Kaen, is still ringing in my ears days later.
This particular night Khon Kaen was playing Ayutthaya. When we walked into the stadium the score was already 0-2, Ayutthaya’s lead. However, this did not put a damper on the Khon Kaen cheering section. Cheers, chants and drums were heard the entire match. The game was coming to a close and I was out of my 50 baht beer, so of course, I had to head downstairs for another. Right as I was about to exit the stadium, a penalty kick opportunity presented itself for Khon Kaen. I decided to put my beer run on hold and watch. You can see the outcome of this and the crowds crazy reaction at the end of this video.
