Finally Settled in Khon Kaen, Thailand

After much deliberation of the housing options we explored over a week and some change, we settled on CP Land Condominium in Khon Kaen, Thailand.  This condo rings the cash register in at a whopping $230 USD (6,500 baht) after condominium fees (800 baht). For the money this is by far the best bang for the buck. CP Land is one of a few new condo projects going up in Khon Kaen, which seems to be the latest craze, as the most recent number I have heard is 14 projects underway. The “planned” condo projects are selling out one-two years in advance of breaking ground. Nonetheless, we are lucky we found this condo, which was by complete accident while searching for another condo project, The Destiny.

House Hunting in Khon Kaen

khon kaen condoInitially we drove around looking at houses, most of which were located in the very nice and in Khon Kaen, prestigious, neighborhood of Piman Chol 2.  As you can see, the houses have been built in the last year and are in a Western style neighborhood.  Driving around was a chore in itself, because all signs are in Thai. The procedure would be to drive around until we saw a sign, which could have meant any number of things, take a picture and leave. After a day of driving around, I would have a Thai person translate the signs, and if they turned out to be for rent, we would then call to set up an appointment to view them. Of the five houses we went and looked at, not one appointment was on time, very much Thai protocol. All of the houses were beautiful, but one of two requirements prevented us from renting, A. One year lease or B. Not fully furnished. This would mean we had to lock in for a year, of which I did not want to do in the event we leave Khon Kaen to explore elsewhere, or had to buy furniture of which we had just purged our lives of before leaving the States. It has been hard enough lugging around five large suitcases so buying more junk was not an option. On the other hand the condominiums, or as I would like to call them glorified hotel rooms, we had viewed prior were old, stinky, small, or very jail-cell like.

After a solid week of house hunting and not finding anything suitable, we became a bit discouraged. The language barrier played a huge part of problems we experienced. We also both experienced painful sunburn……

Enter CP Land Condominium. I had a connection here in Khon Kaen whom had a condo for rent in the nicest of condos, The Destiny. While khon kaen condodriving to the appointment to view this beauty, we soon realized, google maps are in Thai, and the website for Destiny is in Thai. This meant the quick five minute drive, turned into an hour drive and a spontaneous viewing of CP Land condo while we were here asking for directions. We did make it to see the Destiny, which lived up to its reputation, but was more expensive than CP Land, and further outside of the city.

While asking for directions the realtor, who spoke zero English attempted to inform us she had three condos for rent in this newly finished CP Land project. With the help of Bong, the seven day-a-week security guard, we mustered up enough English to go see the first condo. The place was quite the change of pace from the Khon Kaen condo norm. Two room condo? I’m in. Bong tells us we must come back in the morning to meet the owner and sign contract.
khon kaen condoFast forward to next morning: we show up at 9 a.m. as agreed to find out the owner is not here, but Bong (again the security guard) took it upon himself to set up with another owner to show his condo. Wouldn’t you know it, this one had brand new furniture, never been lived in, and was a corner unit. Score.

So we agree to take it, and its another, Phrung Ni (Thai for tomorrow). Owner agrees at the discretion of Bong to bring a translator with him, because the owner Mr. T speaks zero English as well. We show up bright and early the next morning at 9 am again, to find no translator and Mr. T completely confused by my lack of understand Thai script in which the condo contract was written in. A few moments of hemming and hawing, and Mr. T dials up an English speaking cohort. Being the investigative individual I am, I discover this English-speaking friend is actually a woman I already know from the school where she and my good friend work, small world. Finally after a few signatures, here, there and everywhere, the contract was complete, money exchanged and its a done deal, we are in Khon Kaen for at least three months.

Nadia, this is a beautiful house! I wish we would have known when we were in KK. However, we are now in Chiang Mai. I will leave this comment up for others to hopefully see as an option in KK. You may also want to try listing on Baht Sold and DD Property. Those were the two websites that I constantly looked at when we were house hunting.
